Salary: Master Pay Scale Point 27 (HK$63,100 per month) to Master Pay Scale Point 44 (HK$122,045 per month) 
Entry Requirements: Candidates should have :

(a) a Master degree in Statistics from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent;

OR

(b) (i) a first or second class honours bachelor’s degree in Statistics from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent; or
(ii) been designated as Graduate Statistician of the Hong Kong Statistical Society, or equivalent; and
(iii) a Master degree in Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, or a related field from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent;

OR

(c) (i) a first or second class honours bachelor’s degree in Statistics from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent; or
(ii) a first or second class honours bachelor’s degree with Statistics as one of the subjects taken, in Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, or a related field from a university in Hong Kong, or equivalent; or
(iii) been designated as Graduate Statistician of the Hong Kong Statistical Society, or equivalent; and
(iv) at least two years’ post-graduate experience at an appropriate level of responsibility in statistics-related work;

AND

(d) a pass result in the Aptitude Test (AT) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE);

(e) met the language proficiency requirements of ‘Level 2’ results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the CRE, or equivalent; and

(f) a pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test. 
Note: (1) A recognised Master or bachelor’s degree in programmes with substantial contents of Statistics (e.g. programmes on risk management, actuarial science, data science, data analytics) will be considered as equivalent to a Master or bachelor’s degree in Statistics respectively.
(2) Applicants who do not possess the requisite qualification by the close of the application period, i.e. 29 July 2026, are regarded as not having met the entry requirements. However, current final year postgraduates who have sat for the CRE may also apply; if selected, appointment will be subject to their obtaining the required academic qualifications within 2025/26 academic year and meeting the language proficiency and aptitude test requirements by the close of the application period.
(3) Candidates’ results in the AT paper are classified as Pass or Fail. The results of the Use of Chinese (UC) and Use of English (UE) papers in the CRE are classified as Level 2, Level 1 or Fail, with Level 2 being the highest.
(4) For civil service appointment purpose, Level 5 or above in Chinese Language of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE); or Grade C or above in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the UC paper of the CRE.
Level 5 or above in English Language of the HKDSEE; or Grade C or above in Use of English of the HKALE; or Grade C or above in English Language of the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) (GCE A Level), are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the UE paper of the CRE.
Applicants with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the two-year validity period of the test result are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the UE paper of the CRE. The IELTS test result must be valid on any date during the application period, i.e. 10 to 29 July 2026.
(5) All applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their knowledge of the Basic Law and the National Security Law. A pass result in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test (BLNST) is an entry requirement for all civil service. Only those candidates who have passed the BLNST will be considered for appointment.
For candidates who have not taken the relevant BLNST or have not attained a pass result in the relevant BLNST at the time of application, they may still apply for the job and arrangements will be made for them to take the relevant BLNST during the recruitment process.
(6) Candidates are required to sit for a written examination, which is tentatively scheduled to be held in Hong Kong on 5 September 2026 (Saturday). Details will be announced in due course. The result of the written examination will be used for screening in candidates for selection interview. As it takes time to process all applications, an invitation to the written examination does not imply that an applicant has met the entry requirements of the post being applied for. 
Duties: Mainly deployed on :
(a) taking charge of a section of the department (or a statistical unit of other bureaux/departments) to drive, coordinate, review and integrate statistical and data science projects undertaken by the section/unit;
(b) developing, organising and implementing statistical and data science projects/systems under the guidance of a Senior Statistician;
(c) conducting statistical analyses and data science studies, and presenting the methods and outputs;
(d) undertaking researches on key statistical and data science issues as directed by a Senior Statistician;
(e) addressing the needs of data users and advising them on the interpretation and application of data for policy formulation, planning, decision making and research; and
(f) supervising and providing professional guidance and coaching to statistical staff. 
Terms of Appointment: A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, the officer may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms. 
General Notes: (a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment.

In these circumstances, only shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend written examination and/or selection interview.
(h) It is Government policy to place people with a disability in appropriate jobs wherever possible. If a disabled candidate meets the entry requirements, he/she will be invited to attend the written examination and/or selection interview without being subject to further shortlisting. Applicants who have declared disabilities found suitable for appointment may be given an appropriate degree of preference over other applicants whose suitability for appointment is considered comparable to that of the former. (i) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. (j) Towards the application deadline, the on-line system would likely be overloaded due to large volume of applications. To ensure timely completion of your on-line application, it is advisable to submit the application as early as possible.

(b) Copies of documents in support of academic qualifications (including results achieved in Chinese and English languages, degree certificates and official transcripts), technical qualifications and working experience (if applicable), should be submitted to the email address (recruitment@censtatd.gov.hk) on or before 5 August 2026. Please specify clearly in the email subject “Application for the post of Statistician” and the on-line application number should be quoted in the email and the attachment’s name. To avoid delayed or unsuccessful transmission via email, all relevant supporting documents should be combined into one file with a file size not exceeding 25 MB as far as possible.
(c) If applications are late or incomplete, or not made in the prescribed form, or submitted in person, by post, by fax or by email, or without copies of the relevant supporting documents, or if the relevant supporting documents are received after the above specified dates or are insufficient, such applications will NOT be considered.
(d) Current final year postgraduates should state in their applications the qualifications they would attain on completion of the final examination.

Candidates who are invited to sit for the written examination will receive separate invitation(s) by email in about three to four weeks from the closing date for applications (applicants are responsible for ensuring that the provided email addresses can receive the invitations).
