Police Translator II
Master Pay Scale Point 10 ($22,865-HK) to Master Pay Scale Point 21($40,420-HK) per month
(a)(I)(i) Level 2 or equivalent or above in 5 subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSEE), or equivalent; or (I)(ii) Level 2/Grade E or above in 5 subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE), or equivalent; plus 3 years’ experience in jobs involving either translation and interpretation work or the frequent use of written and spoken English; OR (a)(II) a higher diploma in translation/interpretation from a Hong Kong polytechnic/polytechnic university or a diploma in Chinese/English from a registered post-secondary college awarded after the date of its registration, or equivalent; OR (a)(III) an accredited Associate Degree in translation/interpretation or in Chinese/English from a Hong Kong tertiary institution, or equivalent; (b) English typing speed of 30 words per minute; and (c) met the language proficiency requirements of Level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language in the HKDSEE or HKCEE, or equivalent; and fluency in Putonghua (be able to pass a Putonghua Examination administered by the Department).
[Notes : (1) The subjects in (a)(I) above may include Chinese Language and English Language; (2) Candidates will be required to pass a translation test before they are selected for Putonghua Examination/English typing test/interview.]
(1)For civil service appointment purpose, “Attained with Distinction” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade C in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 3 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE. “Attained” in Applied Learning subjects (subject to a maximum of two Applied Learning subjects), and Grade E in Other Language subjects in the HKDSEE are accepted as equivalent to Level 2 in the New Senior Secondary subjects in the HKDSEE.
(2)The subjects may include Chinese Language and English Language.
(3)For civil service appointment purpose, ‘Grade C’ and ‘Grade E’ in Chinese Language and English Language (Syllabus B) in the HKCEE before 2007 are accepted administratively as comparable to ‘Level 3’ and ‘Level 2’ respectively in Chinese Language and English Language in the 2007 HKCEE and henceforth.
(4) For the purpose of heightening public awareness of the Basic Law (BL) and promoting a culture of learning of BL in the community, applicants for civil service jobs will be assessed on their BL knowledge. The BL test result will constitute an appropriate weighting in a candidate’s overall assessment. Candidates who are invited to attend the selection interview will be assessed on their BL knowledge through a written test to be conducted immediately before or after the selection interview.
A Police Translator II is mainly deployed on performing translation, interpretation and preparation of charge sheets duties in Police Stations, Crime offices or any other Formation/Unit as required.
[Note : A Police Translator II is required to work shifts (including night shifts).]
Terms of Appointment:
A new recruit will normally be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, he/she may be considered for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.
(a) Candidates must be permanent residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the time of appointment unless specified otherwise.

(g) Where a large number of candidates meet the specified entry requirements, the recruiting department may devise shortlisting criteria to select the better qualified candidates for further processing. In these circumstances, only shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend recruitment examination and/or interview.
(h) It is Government policy to place people with a disability in appropriate jobs wherever possible. If a disabled candidate meets the entry requirements, he/she will be invited to attend the selection interview/written examination without being subject to further shortlisting. Applicants who have declared disabilities found suitable for appointment may be given an appropriate degree of preference over other applicants whose suitability for appointment is considered comparable to that of the former. (i) Holders of academic qualifications other than those obtained from Hong Kong institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority may also apply but their qualifications will be subject to assessments on equivalence with the required entry qualifications. They should submit copies of their official transcripts and certificates by mail to the below enquiry address.

Application Forms [G.F. 340 (Rev. 3/2013)] are obtainable from any Home Affairs Enquiry Centres of District Offices, Home Affairs Department or any Job Centres of the Employment Services Division, Labour Department. The said form can also be downloaded from the Civil Service Bureau's website (http://www.csb.gov.hk). Applications submitted by mail should reach the enquiry address of the recruiting department on or before the closing date for application (the postmark date on the envelope will be regarded as the date of submission of application). Please specify on the envelope “Application for the post of Police Translator II”. To avoid unsuccessful delivery of mail items, please ensure that sufficient postage has been paid before posting. Applicants will bear any consequences arising from paying insufficient postage. Online applications can be made through the Civil Service Bureau's website (http://www.csb.gov.hk). Late or incomplete applications or applications submitted by fax or e-mail will not be accepted. For qualifications awarded by local institutions/Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, copies of the relevant transcripts/diplomas/certificates or other qualification documents are not required to be submitted at this stage of application. As for qualifications obtained from institutions outside Hong Kong, copies of the relevant transcripts/diplomas/certificates or other qualification documents should be submitted in A4 paper size together with the completed application forms by mail to the enquiry address on or before the closing date for application. Those who apply online should submit copies of the required supporting documents in A4 paper size by mail to the enquiry address within 7 calendar days after close of application period, and the online application number should be quoted on the envelope and every page of the copies of the supporting documents. Do not send any copies of the supporting documents by fax or e-mail. If candidates fail to state clearly the results of ALL subjects obtained in public examinations or fail to provide the required supporting documents within the specified time, their applications will not be considered. Do not send any originals of transcripts/diplomas/certificates or other qualification documents. A notification of any change of personal particulars/academic attainment/professional qualification/employment record after close of application period should be sent to the recruiting department by e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as practicable. Candidates who are invited to sit for the translation test will normally receive an invitation by mail in ten to twelve weeks from the closing date for application.
